Microsoft has just released a fix for licensing and activation issues that crop up with Expression Web 4. Some of the symptoms of licensing and/or activation issues may include:

Expression Web 4 reverts to trial mode.

You receive a message that states that the product key is invalid.

The product key is not accepted during the Expression Web 4 installation process.

You receive a message that states that Expression Web 4 was already activated with the product key.

If you are experiencing any problems such as this, the fix Microsoft has released should resolve the issue. For additional details and to download the fix go to:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2635101

To download the fix, click the “View and request hotfix downloads” hyperlink at the beginning of the article. You will first have to accept the Terms & Conditions BEFORE being directed to the download page.

Download link.

This fix is only for Expression Web 4. If you are encounter a licensing or activation issue with another Expression Studio product, you will need to open a support case with Microsoft to get that issue resolved. To open a support ticket with Microsoft see Forum FAQ and Guidelines – Start Here and scroll down to the 3rd bold-faced item which states, in part:

If you are having a problem with Expression Web activation or if the product will not accept your product key, you may have a corrupt license store. That problem often cannot be resolved without the assistance of Microsoft Consumer Technical Support. For these issues, you can open a case with us using the steps outlined above. There will be no charge for these cases. Using any other method to contact Microsoft will not get you to the right group. Please contact us using the method outlined above.

If you download the patch and you receive an error that Web_en.msi could not be located, please download the “FullFile” version of the fix and install it on top of your existing installation. This will upgrade your existing installation of Expression Web 4 to SP2a which includes the fix. See the download link listed above.

This service pack provides support for HTML 5, CSS3, and PHP 5.3 as well as the ability to visually diagnose user authenticated pages with SuperPreview.

What’s new in Expression Studio Web 4 SP1

You can read all about what is covered in What’s new in Expression Studio Web 4 SP1.

Knowledge Base article on Description of Expression Web 4 Service Pack 1

Expression Web 4 SP1 provides complete support for HTML 5 in the Code Editor and significant support in Design View. IntelliSense in the code editor makes it easy to insert the new HTML5 tags into your markup. Block and inline elements are easily selectable in Design View, where they can be styled and adjusted.

Expression Web 4 SP1 provides support for hundreds of new properties from the draft CSS3 specification. In addition to IntelliSense support, CSS3 is supported in the CSS Properties pane, as well as the New Style and Modify Style dialog boxes.

Expression Web’s expanded PHP support now incorporates IntelliSense for the latest functions from PHP 5.3, as well as providing support for over 130 additional PHP modules (including many PEAR-related libraries). Function tooltips now offer information about the version in which a given function became supported by PHP. The Open As PHP feature allows any file (regardless of extension) to be treated as a PHP document by the program.

It’s now easier to find and type extended HTML characters with Expression Web’s IntelliSense Character Entities. As soon as you type a “&,” you’ll get a list of the HTML character entities that filters as you continue to type.

The Expression SuperPreview online service is a beta service that extends the capability of SuperPreview to include support for additional browsers and operating systems. Remote browsers include Chrome, IE8, IE9 and Safari 4 and 5 on Windows and Mac.

Expression SuperPreview allows you to preview web content that requires user authentication. For example, if you want to preview an administration page for a blog site, you typically have to log on with administrative credentials. You can now enter logon credentials, browse to the page of interest and preview that page in multiple browsers through Expression SuperPreview.

Internet Explorer 9 is now supported as a local browser for both SuperPreview and the Expression Web Snapshot feature, and Internet Explorer 8 is now built into these preview tools. If you have Internet Explorer 9 installed, you can view page renderings in Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9. Additionally, Expression Web 4 Service Pack 1 detects more browsers installed on your system (including Chrome, Safari and Opera) and automatically populates the Preview in Browser menu.

System Requirements

Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 3

PC with 1 GHz or faster processor

1 GB of RAM or more

2 GB or more of available hard-disk space

.NET Framework 4.0

Silverlight 4.0

The current version of Expression Web is version 4. Are there new features you would like to see in future versions? Or are some of your favorite features missing from the current version? Now YOU have the opportunity to let the Expression Web team know what features you would most like to have.

The Expression Web team has set up a site https://expressionweb.uservoice.com/ on User Voice where you can vote on some of the features already listed and/or add your own “wish list” features. Some of the features most wished for are:

Customize dialog box where you can really add a custom toolbar with commands and options. Not the current add-in which is really just a favorites toolbar.

CSS layout generator perhaps on the order of the add-in that was available for EW 1 and 2 – CSS Sculptor.

CSS menu widget

Support for server-side-includes.

Photo Gallery

Forms control

These are just a few of items on the “wish list.” Now you have the opportunity to be heard and tell MS what you would like to see in future versions of Expression Web. You can vote on the features as well as add comments. So head on over to https://expressionweb.uservoice.com/ and add your voice to the Expression Web community.

Ian Haynes has developed another Expression Web Add-in for version 4. His WordPaste Add-In for Expression Web V4 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Gallery. Once you install the add-in you will see three new icons on your standard toolbar.

WordPaste Add-in icons on Standard Toolbar.

Open your MS Word document and copy the content you want to paste into Expression Web. Place your cursor on the page where you want the new content to appear. Click the Paste from MS Word icon (middle one shown above). In the dialog box shown below, Paste your copied content.

Paste from Word dialog box.

Click the Insert button. NOTE: The large empty space in the above image shows where the graphic was in the Word document. The blank space is not there in the pasted content.

This add-in pastes the text and the basic HTML structure into your Word document. It will NOT paste any images that may have been part of the content.

Using the WordPaste add-in will give you a far better result than pasting via NotePad and and makes the job much easier.

The add-in has been tested with MS Word™ 2003, 2007 and 2010. For some notes and hints on using it, visit Ian’s site, EW Resource for information on the other Expression Web Add-ins Ian Haynes has developed.

Thanks Ian for this much needed add-in and for making Expression Web even better.

Download WordPaste Add-In for Expression Web V4
and give it a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Expression Studio 4.0 was launched at Internet Week in NYC on June 7th. If you have already purchased Expression Studio 3.0 or Expression Web 3.0 you are entitled to a FREE upgrade.

How does the free upgrade work?

The Expression Web 4 free upgrade is only available for users who have purchased the retail version of Expression Web 3 (e.g., from DigitalRiver, from the Microsoft Store, a retail box copy, etc.). In that case, you can download and install the trial of the version 4 product and the version 4 setup should handle the licensing for you, as it should retrieve the license from the Windows license store.

If you have any other version (e.g., a volume license copy, MSDN, DreamSpark, etc.), the free upgrade is NOT available. You will either need to either buy a copy of version 4 or will need to acquire version 4 through your original source as it becomes available there. It is already posted at MSDN.

How to tell which version I have

If you need to check whether your copy of Expression Web 3 is eligible for the free upgrade, choose Help > About Microsoft Expression Web and look at the product ID number. It should be form of a 5-digit number, a dash, a 3-digit number, a dash, etc. If that 3-digit number is 617, you are eligible for the free upgrade. Otherwise, you are not.

Once you have installed and activated upgrade version, you can check to see that is is a fully licensed version by again selecting Help > About Microsoft Expression Web. You should see about the Product Code “This is a fully licensed copy.”

Licensing

Expression Web 4 can be licensed and activated on, at the most, two systems, e.g., a laptop and a desktop. If you need to reinstall on one of those systems, e.g., because you reinstalled Windows, you should be able to reinstall Expression Web 4 and reactivate at that time.

Reinstalling Expression Web 4

If you took advantage of the free upgrade from version 3 to version 4, save your copy of version 3! If you need to reinstall version 4, after you have reformatted your computer, for example, you will need to first install and license version 3, then install version 4. If you have not reformatted your computer but just need to reinstall version 4, you should not have any problem, as the version 3 license will still be in the Windows license store even if you had previously uninstalled version 3.

What’s new in Expression Web
