Expression Web 4.0

Expression Studio 4.0 was launched at Internet Week in NYC on June 7th. If you have already purchased Expression Studio 3.0 or Expression Web 3.0 you are entitled to a FREE upgrade.

How does the free upgrade work?

The Expression Web 4 free upgrade is only available for users who have purchased the retail version of Expression Web 3 (e.g., from DigitalRiver, from the Microsoft Store, a retail box copy, etc.). In that case, you can download and install the trial of the version 4 product and the version 4 setup should handle the licensing for you, as it should retrieve the license from the Windows license store.

If you have any other version (e.g., a volume license copy, MSDN, DreamSpark, etc.), the free upgrade is NOT available. You will either need to either buy a copy of version 4 or will need to acquire version 4 through your original source as it becomes available there. It is already posted at MSDN.

How to tell which version I have

If you need to check whether your copy of Expression Web 3 is eligible for the free upgrade, choose Help > About Microsoft Expression Web and look at the product ID number. It should be form of a 5-digit number, a dash, a 3-digit number, a dash, etc. If that 3-digit number is 617, you are eligible for the free upgrade. Otherwise, you are not.

Once you have installed and activated upgrade version, you can check to see that is is a fully licensed version by again selecting Help > About Microsoft Expression Web. You should see about the Product Code “This is a fully licensed copy.”

Licensing

Expression Web 4 can be licensed and activated on, at the most, two systems, e.g., a laptop and a desktop. If you need to reinstall on one of those systems, e.g., because you reinstalled Windows, you should be able to reinstall Expression Web 4 and reactivate at that time.

Reinstalling Expression Web 4

If you took advantage of the free upgrade from version 3 to version 4, save your copy of version 3! If you need to reinstall version 4, after you have reformatted your computer, for example, you will need to first install and license version 3, then install version 4. If you have not reformatted your computer but just need to reinstall version 4, you should not have any problem, as the version 3 license will still be in the Windows license store even if you had previously uninstalled version 3.

Expression Studio 4 Launch Event

Expression Studio 4.0, of which Expression Web 4.0 is a part, is due to be launched at Internet Week New York which is held June 7th thru June 14th. The actual launch is on June 7th from 11:00am to 1:00pm. If you are going to be in New York and would like to attend the launch, you can register at Microsoft Expression Studio 4 Launch. Internet Week is a festival celebrating New York City’s Internet industry and community. Bill Buxton will be the featured guest speaker, he is the Principal Researcher at Microsoft and author of the book “Sketching User Experiences: Getting the Design Right and the Right Design.“ The worldwide launch of Microsoft Expression Studio 4, design tools for the Web, the desktop, mobile devices, and Silverlight is just one part of this festival.

What you have to do to enter the contest.

Design a 404 error page that uses a play on words or a play on a specific photo, or introduces a double meaning or even a pun. You can enter as many times as you wish BUT the entry has to be your own original work either for your site or a client’s site.

Once you have designed your page, and published it to your server, head on over to Tina’s Expression Web Blog, click on the Contact page on the menu and enter the following:

Implementing 404 error pages.

Check with your hosts help files to find out how to implement the error pages for your server. I have tutorials on both BlueHost and 1and1 and have found links for three others.

What if I can’t implement a 404 page?

Not to worry. If your host does not allow custom 404 pages for whatever reason just upload the page as a page and enter it as the design.

Expression Web 3.0 Service Pack 2

Microsoft has announced the release of Service Pack 2 for Expression Web 3.0. You can install this Service Pack if you have Expression Web 3.0 or EW 3.0 with Service Pack 1 installed on your computer. Expression Web 3 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is now live on the Microsoft Download Center. Expression Web 3 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is available for download here.

More Information

Issues resolved in this service pack

When editing PHP, files you may have been asked to update related hyperlinks on the page. If you did so, some PHP tags may have been removed. PHP tags are no longer removed when you update related hyperlinks.
When you renamed a PDF file from the Folder List, the PDF file became corrupted and could not be opened. PDF files now save normally.
Expression Web 3 would crash if the list-style-image property was used in a CSS file. Using the list-style-image property in a CSS file no longer causes Expression Web to crash.
SuperPreview sometimes crashed while launching because of a problem that occurred when locating Firefox on your computer. SuperPreview no longer crashes while locating Firefox.

Improvements provided by this service pack

SuperPreview now supports Firefox 3.6. If Firefox 3.6 is installed on your computer, then it should be available in SuperPreview.

If you have not yet upgraded from Expression Web versions 1 or 2 to Expression Web 3.0, you might be interested in knowing that Microsoft has announced that all current owners of Expression Web 3.0 will receive a FREE upgrade to Expression Web 4.0 WHEN IT IS RELEASED. No date for this has been announced as yet.

So according to the Microsoft site, if you are an existing owner or a new purchaser of Expression Studio 3.0 or Expression Web 3.0 you will be entitled to the upgrade to Expression Studio 4 or Expression Web 4.0 when it is released.

Using an Access 2007 database with ASP.NET 3.5 and Expression Web 3

The latest post on the Expression Web Team Blog by Justin Harrison who is the Program Manager on the Expression Web Team, gives you step-by-step instructions for Using an Access 2007 database with ASP.NET 3.5 and Expression Web 3. At the same time, Justin indicates that the process will be much easier in Expression Web 4 which has NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.

For those of you who have thought about upgrading to Expression Web 3.0 BUT have not yet done so, it was announced at the MIX 2010 Conference, if you have purchased Expression Web 3, you will get Expression Web 4 for free! (See here for details).
