Morten Rand-Hendriksen is a fellow Expression Web MVP and the author of Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Expression Web 3 in 24 Hours and is a guest poster for the Expression Web Team Blog with his timely article Rule over the true powers of Find. If you have not used the Find feature in Expression Web, you are missing out on a great tool. Morten writes:

If you use Expression Web or most any text editing and reading software, you likely already use the Find feature to search for text. But if you’re one of the few who is not using the Find feature in Expression Web, you are likely wasting time doing repetitive tasks the program can do for you far more efficiently. I don’t know about you but for me time = money and I like to spend as little of the former to get as much of the latter as possible. And to that end Find is an important tool in my toolbox. In this post, I’ll breeze over the basic Find features everyone should already be using, and then dive deeper into a few scenarios for using more advanced Find options called HTML Rules.

Read Rule over the true powers of Find and find out for yourself how YOU can use this great feature to help with your own work flow.

Morten Rand-Hendriksen, a fellow MVP for Expression Web and author of Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Expression Web 2 and 3 in 24 Hours has added his latest tutorial Build a fancy author or profile box with Expression Web. Morten gives you step-by-step instructions for building the profile box including the code and css. You are then free to edit the css and/or code so that it works for you.

A profile box is a great way of quickly giving your visitors information about a person featured on your site. These boxes normally feature a quote or short biography followed by the person’s name, affiliation and maybe a photo and usually are just straight up blockquotes or something similar. In other words they are a bit boring. But there really is no reason why they should be: Text and images on the web can pretty much be displayed in any layout you want. All you need is the creativity to come up with a better way of displaying it and either the knowledge of CSS and HTML to get it done or a tool to help you along the way.

With the release of Expression Studio 3 at hand, it is a great time to start getting into some of the changes you’ll find in Expression Web. Some of the most significant changes are in the FTP publishing features. Not only has it been changed from a standpoint of how a user accesses it, but its default behavior and underpinnings have been changed radically, for the better.

He takes you through the process step-by-step with plenty of screen shots. You can read Expression Web 3 FTP Publishing in its entirety and sign up for the newsletter.

Chris is the author of Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft Press) and Expression Web 2 Step by Step (Microsoft Press). Both books can be purchased through Amazon.com. Chis is also the developer of ContentSeed, an easy to use CMS that works with every editor INCLUDING Expression Web.

Cheryl Wise of by-expression.com produces some of the BEST viseo tutorials on Expression Web. Are they on the endangered species list? Cheryl posts on her blog:

I’m considering pulling all of the free tutorials on this site since most of the comments I’m getting are complaints about downloading.

I’ve had a few comments posted on my tutorials, primarily the Building a Basic Website in Expression Web tutorial that indicate some people have had problems with viewing or downloading the tutorials. The latest ones have been quite rude and frankly, I don’t appreciate comments like “get a real host”.

One of the first tutorials I recommend to new users of Expression Web is her Building a Basic Website in Expression Web. The tutorials are large – 1 hour 20 minutes for the full version (122.7mb) and 18-30 minutes for each of the four parts. Unless you are on a really fast connection expect it to take a few minutes to start. That takes a lot of bandwidth and a large amount of server space. None of this is free. Instead of thank-yous for providing this service, she is getting complaints on the amount of time it takes. I for one, would hate to see this resource disappear.

You can read her full post at My Tutorials.

That same process is not available in Expression Web.

The Expression Web Team Blog has an article Manage your FPSE Site permissions without using FrontPage 2003.

When former FrontPage users first start using Expression Web, a common question is “How do I edit the permissions to my Website or subweb?”.

While FrontPage 2003 provides users the ability to manage permissions to their FPSE Website through an Administration Website linked to from the application, Expression Web doesn’t provide the same level of integration.
When using FrontPage 2003 to edit your FPSE Website or subweb, users can manage its permissions by using the Tools -> Server -> Permissions menu. That will bring up the Administration Website for your FPSE Website on your Web browser.
